Book Review: Finlay Donovan Knocks 'Em Dead

Synopsis:

Finlay Donovan is—once again—struggling to finish her next novel and keep her head above water as a single mother of two. On the bright side, she has her live-in nanny and confidant Vero to rely on, and the only dead body she’s dealt with lately is that of her daughter’s pet goldfish.

On the not-so-bright side, someone out there wants her ex-husband, Steven, out of the picture. Permanently. Whatever else Steven may be, he’s a good father, and Finlay is determined to keep him and her children safe. But doing so will lead her down a rabbit hole wherein soccer moms may be hit-women in disguise and the Russian mob is much more involved than she would like.

Meanwhile, Vero’s keeping secrets, and Detective Nick Anthony seems determined to get back into her life. He may be a hot cop, but Finlay’s first priority is preventing her family from sleeping with the fishes… and if that means bending a few laws then so be it.

With her next book’s deadline looming and an ex-husband to keep alive, Finlay is quickly coming to the end of her rope. She can only hope there isn’t a noose at the end of it. (synopsis can be found here)

My Thoughts...

I was so excited to jump back into this story and world. As a mother of two who, most days, does not feel like she has it all together, Finlay is incredibly relatable. And somehow, while being a bit of a mess, she still manages to partake in a dash of organized crime.

I think I preferred the first book over this one by just a little—but I take full responsibility for waiting two years between reading them. Because of that, it took me a little time to get back into the swing of who’s who and what are we doing here? Luckily, this book picks up right where the first one leaves off, which definitely helped.

What kept me so invested in this story was trying to figure out who the heck Fed Up and Easy Clean were. They really could have been anyone. Watching Finlay and Vero work their way through the suspects was stressful, funny, and engaging. There were so many possibilities, and honestly? There still are.

I was a little sad about the direction the love story is taking. I found myself gravitating toward one of the love interests more than the other, but sometimes things just don’t work out the way you want them to. However, I don’t think anything is final—we’re still so early in the series. My guy may just make a comeback… who knows? It was interesting to see how things played out with Nick being involved romantically. Because what else fo you need when trying to find a hitman? Your police officer boyfriend showing up unannounced.

This is a fantastic series for anyone looking to get into murder mystery/thrillers. The vibe is more fun and quirky rather than serious, and the books are super easy to follow. Finlay trying to solve crimes and save her ex while simultaneously potty training one kid and dealing with the other losing their first tooth is hysterical.

Even though I didn’t enjoy it quite as much as the first, I’m excited to continue the series and see what Finlay gets into next. There’s always another twist or turn to keep you on your toes—especially that ending. I did NOT see that coming.
